Short Review of e-Bike Batteries

The battery is one of the vital components of an electric bike. Whether the e-bike has pedal-assist mode only or throttle, the battery provides the energy to power the electric motor of the vehicle. The battery also adds weight to electric bikes. . There are several types of batteries :

  •         Lead (Gel). This type of battery is less frequently used for electric bikes because of its several drawbacks. A gel battery is usually very heavy and has low capacity.
  •         Lithium Polymer (Li-Po). This type of battery has been used in electric cars successfully. They have better capacity and longer life com[ared to gel batteries. However, they are not resistant to impact and vibrations.
  •         Lithium-ion (Li-ion). These batteries are perfect for electric bicycles. A Li-ion battery offers the best tradeoff between weight and capacity. Compared to other types, Li-ion batteries have the greatest capacity and longer life. Their drawback is their sensitivity to temperature changes, which can alter their performance.

Main Parameters of Every e-Powered Device

The electric characteristics of e-powered devices can be described by three basic parameters:

  •         Volts. It is the potential with which electrons are pushed through an electric circuit.
  •         Amps. It is the flow of electrons across a wire section of an electric circuit.
  •         Watts. It is the electric power that the device consumes. Watts are the product Volts × Amps.

However, none of the above parameters alone characterizes completely the performance of a battery. Therefore, we usually use two additional parameters:

  •         Amp-Hours (Ah). It indicates the number of Amps that a battery can sustain during 1 hour.
  •         Watt-Hours (Wh). It indicates the amount of usable energy per hour. This parameter provides a clear idea of the capacity of the battery.

What Affects Battery Life and Range?

You should take good care of your e-bike’s battery since multiple factors can impact its life and performance. The type of terrain, inclination, riding style, and tire pressure all play a role. Avoid direct blows to the battery, and always handle it with care when you remove or mount it. You should keep your battery charged even if you don’t plan on using your electric bike for a long time. Also, don’t charge your battery under freezing temperatures, and overheat it during summer rides.
